What are complementary pathways?
Complementary pathways are distinct from resettlement. Third countries set their own criteria for supplementary routes and decide who will be admitted to their territory. Refugees and asylum-seekers can apply directly for such opportunities, and a UNHCR referral is not required.
What is family reunification?
Family reunification brings together family members who live in different countries. Family reunification for refugees is a situation in which family members have been separated, and at least one family member has been recognized as a refugee, or holder of temporary or subsidiary protection status by the country in which they live. The refugee can then apply for his family to join him in that country.
Family reunification programs and who qualify for these programs are determined and managed by the different countries in which your family members live.
How can ICLA help you?
The NRC Information, Counselling and Legal Assistance (ICLA) programme provides free legal support to refugees in Uganda who are seeking to reunite with their family members in a third country. Our services include guidance on the legal processes, documentation support, and referrals where necessary. There is no cost for NRC’s services.
